There is a plentiful number of foraging chinook in the 5-15lb range. This fishery stays open until March 31st. The Dungeness Crab & Spot fishing by trap is excellent at this time of year. **Spring** From April 1st chinook is still plentiful, but is closed for conservation of the upper Fraser River stocks. May 1st opens for Lingcod & rockfish retention off Vancouver Island, requires a full day trip. The prawn fishing will remain strong through to Mid May when the commercial harvest starts. Crabbing is also good through the spring. **Summer** The first retention fishery for salmon in the summer is coho starting in early June and continues until early October. Chinook opens July 15th in limited areas and requires a full day charter. September 1st chinook opens off the mouth of the Fraser River and is the best opportunity to land a Chinook over 20lbs. It is anticipated that there will be a sockeye opening mid August through to mid September. Crabbing slows down early July due to the commercial harvest. Prawn fishing picks up starting mid July a month after the commercial harvest ends. **Fall** Coho & Chum salmon are both available mid October, by then they have made their way into their native rivers to spawn. Chinook fishing transitions from catching mature chinook to targeting feeding Chinook that spend the fall and winter foraging in our local waters. The fishing for spot prawns is really getting good by then. Crab fishing starts pick up by mid November. **Categories:** Fishing Outlook --- ### [2025 Fishing Outlook](https://firstfishcharters.ca/2025-fishing-outlook/) **Published:** November 25, 2024 **Author:** Janet Stolth **Content:** **January – March** We are catching chinook in the 5-15 pound range. The results have been excellent so far. **April/May** Fishing for chinook these months is closed for retention. We are focused on taking DNA samples to help with future fishing opportunities. **June** Coho Salmon fishing gets going. Lots of action for these scrappy fish. We average hooking 20 per trip. **July – August** Pink, Coho salmon runs are feeding in the area prior to heading up their native rivers to spawn, lots of action on these fisheries. Chinook opens July 15th for a retention of 1 per person, slot size of 62-80cm. We recommend a longer trip for the best opportunity. **September – October** Chinook Salmon opens for 2 per day with no maximum slot size. 7-9 hour charter is recommended. Coho salmon fishing is also excellent during these months. **November – December** We are targeting Chinook salmon that winter in local waters foraging on herring and anchovy. Gulf Islands Chinook Fishing Trips will be operating July 15 – August 31st. Requires a 9 hour charter plus fuel surcharge. Please ask us for more details. For Halibut, Rock Cod or Lingcod we recommend booking a trip on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Let us know if you’d like a recommendation where and when to go. **Categories:** Fishing Outlook --- ## Pages ### [Home](https://firstfishcharters.ca/) **Published:** May 22, 2024 **Author:** Janet Stolth **Content:** # First Fish Charters is your first choice for private fishing charters in Vancouver, BC. ### First Fish Charters is a private saltwater salmon fishing charter operating out of Snug Cove on Bowen Island, BC, with pickup locations in Vancouver, BC. Over many years of fishing together they passed on their knowledge and passion of the sport to him. Warren started his guiding career in 1988 in Campbell River on Vancouver Island.
